Elon Musk and others urge AI pause, citing 'risks to society'

Elon Musk is a technology entrepreneur, business magnate, and philanthropist who is known for founding and co-founding a number of successful companies, including Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, and The Boring Company. Born in South Africa in 1971, Musk began his career as a computer programmer and quickly became interested in the potential of the internet. In the late 1990s, he co-founded Zip2, a company that provided online business directories and city guides to newspapers.

After selling Zip2, Musk founded X.com, an online payment company that later became PayPal. PayPal was acquired by eBay in 2002, and Musk became a multi-millionaire. He then went on to invest his wealth in a number of ambitious projects, including Tesla, which produces electric cars, and SpaceX, which designs and launches spacecraft. Musk is also involved in developing new technologies for the human brain through his company Neuralink, and he has founded The Boring Company to revolutionize the way we travel underground.

Musk is known for his ambitious vision for the future and his determination to tackle some of the world's most pressing challenges, such as climate change and space exploration. He has also made headlines for his controversial statements and public behavior, including his tweets and his appearance on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, where he smoked marijuana. Despite this, Musk remains a highly influential figure in the technology and business world, and his companies continue to push the boundaries of innovation.

In an open letter that emphasises potential risks to society, Elon Musk and a group of artificial intelligence specialists and corporate executives are asking for a six-month ban on the development of systems more powerful than OpenAI's recently released GPT-4.
The GPT (Generative Pre-trained Transformer) AI tool, which has amazed users by engaging them in human-like dialogue, creating melodies, and summarising lengthy texts, received an update earlier this month from Microsoft-backed OpenAI.

According to the letter from the Future of Life Institute, we should only create powerful AI systems if we are certain that both their benefits and risks are acceptable.
